_8 bytes of body

_8 bytes of body

In this data obsessed society our bodies are increasingly being stored as bytes of data. Corporations want all our behaviour patterns, to sell and control. A person's life is cut into pieces and scattered in databases. This data is then manipulated and analysed. Creating new information. New persons. This project critically explores a scenario of a data driven future.

Concept Background

The concept evolved from an exploration of embodiement and data which lead to a speculative design research for a future data obsessed society. The concept intends to provoke on the ever increasing and pervassive collection, storage, and use of data in our everyday lives by private companies for their capitalistic ends.

The academic paper on the project was selected for a presentation at SIDeR 2018.

Physically playing with the idea of breaking data about body into bits and then creating new persons

IMG-20171206-WA0005

Quick hypothesis: Beyond behaviour patterns, identifying information about persons could be stored in as little as _8 bytes. Those would be the only identifying bits.

Can we then wear digital masks?

What if we could exchange our behaviour patterns in a jiffy, in essence changing our digital selves?

The project uses a prototype to inspire such a society, where we have autonomy over our own data but only so far as to exchange it for services to live our daily lives.

Device back

Back with the removable chips that store categorised data

The device is a master control for all data related to a person. Data of different activities is stored seperately on a single chip (the triangle chips as seen). If the chip is removed, the data for that activity would not be tracked or usable.

The device would guide you through the day like a personal assistant. It will measure your divergence from your

patterns and send automatic help incase you cross the

threshold. The device will send you recommendations to fill its own data gap but tailored to your activities. The device itself authenticates you.
